What is Maker (MKR)?
Maker (MKR) is a governance token of the MakerDAO and Maker Protocol. They are decentralized organizations and software platforms, both based on the Ethereum blockchain, that allow users to issue and manage the DAI stablecoin.
Maker was originally conceived in 2015 and officially launched in December of 2017. The project’s mission is to run DAI, a community-managed, decentralized cryptocurrency with a soft US dollar peg.
As a kind of voting share, MKR tokens are issued by the organization that manages DAI; they do not pay dividends, however, they do give their holders voting rights in Maker Protocol development, and are expected to value increase with the success of DAI.
Decentralized finance (DeFi) is the field of creating decentralized financial products, constructed with smart contracts, on top of blockchain networks such as Ethereum. The Maker ecosystem is one of the earliest of these projects.
